Abstract
Background: Depression can affect parents' social and emotional functioning, making them less available to their children. Children and adolescents with depressed mothers have greater alterations in attention, executive functions, working memory and decision-making, with an impact at the socio-emotional and school level. Objective: to evaluate the relationship between principle caregiver affective disorders and cognitive functioning in children and adolescents. Methodology: Descriptive, correlational, cross-sectional research. Sample: 171 children and adolescents from the program Manizales Elige la Vida (Manizales Chooses Life), with their parents or caregivers: 120 with affective-behavioral difficulties and 51 without these difficulties. Instruments: PHQ-9 for caregivers and assessment protocol adapted for the children's neuropsychological assessment (ENI), Trail Making test and apportionment of the WISC-IV intelligence scale. Results: 39% of caregivers symptoms acute depressive symptoms. Regarding the correlation between depression in caregivers (measured with the PHQ-9) and the variables of the children's neuropsychological tests, a significant association was found between alterations in attentional, executive and cognitive performance functions: Digits in regression (p = 0.0022), TMT-A (p = 0.024) and Letter cancellation (p = 0.024). Conclusions: Associations were found between acute depressive symptoms in caregivers, and alteration of attention and executive functions in children, as well as an association between the child's cognitive performance and a family history with affective disorders.
