Abstract
In studies on the nature of emotions and their defining features we find various taxonomies that attempt to classify these phenomena of human life. In this context, this article presents some keys of analysis that allow to differentiate the basic emotions from the complex moral emotions that imply cognitive evaluation processes. If we argue that the cognitive operates in every organism that has information selection processes, and if we base the idea that the level of cognitive complexity present in each species determines the appearance or absence of particular emotional states, then we can distinguish between basic emotions , that we share with non-human animals, of complex emotions that are characteristic of our greater cognitive development. By establishing an interpretative proposal around the classification criteria of these phenomena of human existence, this reflection contributes to the clarification of a discussion that today is of great relevance to psychology, philosophy and the sciences of education such as relationship between emotion and cognition, and the role that emotions play in moral life.
